Chuckie was born on June 24, 1938, at Grand Island, daughter of Charles and Frances (Rittenhouse) Joseph.
Those left to cherish her memory include her dear children, Teri (Jeff) Garey of Grand Island, Tim (Christy) Berney of Hastings and Bobbie Owen of Hastings; sisters, Kathy Sorahan of Grand Island, Gaylene (Bill) Roberts of Sioux Falls, S.D., and Onilee Vasquez of Grand Island; three precious grandchildren and two stepgrandchildren; three beautiful great-grandchildren; along with numerous extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a sister, Jody Rosco; and two infant brothers, Roland and Kurt.
As a lifelong Grand Island resident, Chuckie attended public school in Grand Island and later earned her GED.
On Jan. 4, 1957, she was united in marriage to Francis P. Berney.
She was employed for over 32 years as a waitress for Dreisbachs, and she loved all the bus kids who called her "Little Red Hen." In recent years Chuckie was employed as the cook for the residents at the Grand Island Veterans Home and Lebensraum.
Chuckie was a member of the Platt Duetsche and enjoyed playing bingo with her dear friend, Marilyn Gilroy.
Following her retirement, Chuckie volunteered at Newell Elementary School for her granddaughter Asia's class. Numerous classes of kindergartners and first-graders fondly knew her as Grandma Chuckie as she read to them and helped them learn their sight words.
Birthdays and Christmas were special for Chuckie's family. Chuckie always baked a favorite dessert for everyone's birthday. Christmastime was filled with her homemade cookies, candies and pecan pie. She passed on her love of baking to her great-granddaughter, teaching her how to make noodles and other treats.
An avid reader, Chuckie loved to share her books with family and friends. Murder mysteries were her favorite, and she was always excited to discuss the plot of the book even before others had read it. Chuckie had an endearing spirit and she was there to guide and care for whomever needed it. Her beloved grandchildren and great-grandchildren knew they could always count on Grandma Chuckie.
