Donald John Lanzendorf, 85, of Grand Island, died Saturday, Feb. 25, 2017, at home.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Apfel Funeral Home, with the Rev. Jim Garfield officiating. Inurnment of the ashes will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery at Grand Island.
Visitation will be an hour prior to service time on Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials are suggested to the family.
Donald J. Lanzendorf was born Dec. 22, 1931, at Le Mars, Iowa, the son of George and Elizabeth (Gangler) Lanzendorf. He grew up in Owens, Iowa, receiving his education from Owens High School. He entered the United States Air Force, serving during the Korean War.
He was united in marriage to Joyce Arlene Pellan in June of 1954 at Mead, Neb. To this union eight children were born. He was later united in marriage to Pansy Marie Parker in August of 1983. He was employed by Union Pacific Railroad as a telegrapher/switch operator. He spent most of his life in Grand Island and a short time in St. Louis.
He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Eagles Club.
He loved trains and watching them as they passed by. He enjoyed feeding the geese, collecting miniature trains, cars and coins. His great-granddaughter, Hennessey, was his "Sweetie." He loved Barnie, his beloved animal friend.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Pansy Lanzendorf of Grand Island; four sons, John Lanzendorf of Grand Island, Robert Lanzendorf of Skiatook, Okla., George Lanzendorf of Alda and Paul Lanzendorf of El Reno, Okla.; four daughters, Barb Stutzman and Mary Nissley, both of Clarinda, Iowa, Theresa Little of Grand Island and Jennifer Woodall (Ray) of Caddo Mills, Texas; Pansy's children, Jeannie and Jim Tramel, Steve and Judy Wilson of Spokane, Wash., and Donna Foster of Tennessee; 18-plus grandchildren and 11-plus great-grandchildren; and a brother, Richard Lanzendorf of Virginia.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, John, George and Bill; and three sisters, Helen, Jane and Betty.
