Obituary

Edith E. Pinkston, 104, of Grand Island went to her Heavenly home on Saturday, Oct. 21, 2017.
Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday at All Faiths Funeral Home. A celebration of Edith's life will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home, followed by a graveside service at Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Daniel Naranjo will officiate.
Edith was born May 31, 1913, in Holt County near Atkinson, the eldest daughter of Guy and Lenora (Stone) Strong. She was raised on the family farm and graduated from Pawnee City High School in 1930. She joined her parents at their new home in Arnold, where she met Frank Pinkston.

Edith and Frank were married on her birthday in 1933, and they were blessed with two children, Darrel and Joan. The family lived in Madison and Ceresco before making Grand Island their home in 1942. In 1947, they built a home on North Park Street, where they lived until 1999 when Edith moved to Riverside Lodge. Edith was employed as a secretary for 12 years at Walnut Junior High. After she graduated from Kearney State College with an English and Art degree in 1967, she taught art at Walnut for many years. She retired from public school teaching in 1975, but taught private art classes until she was over 100 years old.
Edith was an accomplished artist and her artwork graces many Grand Island homes and public buildings, including the old First Baptist Church on Eddy, the Stuhr Museum, and the Veterans Hospital. She won many ribbons at the Nebraska State Fair and numerous other awards for her paintings. In 2006 she was presented with the Outstanding Visual Artist Award by the Moonshell Arts and Humanities Council.
Edith's memberships included the First Baptist Church, the Grand Island Sketch Club, the Retired Teachers Association and the Order of Eastern Star, of which she was a 50-year member.

Survivors include her daughter, Joan (Dan) Bennett of Tucson, Ariz.; daughter-in-law, Shelley Pinkston Carter of Hastings; grandchildren, Denise (Steve) Rodenburg, Dana (Shannon Jackson) Bennett, Lori (Gus) Wegren, Sheri (Keith) Thompson, Casey (Brenda) Quaife, Cody (Dawn) Quaife, Colby (Ashley) Quaife, and Caylee Pinkston; and 10 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; her son, Darrel Pinkston; her parents; two brothers, Elvin and Gerald; a sister, Vivian Mosher; and two granddaughters, Deborah and Sarah Pinkston.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the Grand Island Retired Teachers Association student scholarship fund.
