James William Sassen, 95, of Grand Island died Thursday, Jan. 11, 2018, in Lincoln.
A memorial Mass will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Blessed Sacrament, 518 W. State St. in Grand Island. Burial with military rites will follow at Westlawn Cemetery, 3826 W. Stolley Park Road.
A rosary service will be at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the church. The family will greet guests before the service from 4 to 6 pm. Luncheon will follow the burial at Blessed Sacrament.
Jim was born on March 22, 1922, in Grand Island, the son of Edward and Elsie Hansen Sassen. He graduated from St. Mary's High School in Grand Island in 1939. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 to 1945 with the 976th Signal Service Co.
On Oct. 5, 1946, he married Rose Rembolt in Grand Island. He began working for Mid America Dairy in 1948 and was employed there until his retirement in 1985. He also farmed the family farm following the death of his father.
He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Church, American Legion, Elks, Liederkranz Society and Platt-deutsche Society.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rose; his parents; his brother, Donald, and wife, Dorothy; and his sister, Agnes Whitefoot.
He is survived by his daughter, Sharre Jahde of Lincoln; three granddaughters, Julie Pospishil (Brad) of Omaha, Carrie Jahde (Mike Schaller) of Berkeley, Calif., and Emily Mefort (Matt) of Lincoln; one grandson, Andrew Jahde, of Loveland, Colo.; five great-grandchildren, Jaden and Elena Pospishil and Eliana,
Natalie and Clara Mefort; a brother-in-law, Jerry Whitefoot of Santa Barbara,
Calif.; and a sister-in-law, Nancy Rembolt of Kingman, Ariz.
