Obituary for Janelle F Shanahan

Janelle F. Shanahan, 94, of Grand Island passed away on Sunday, February 17, 2019 at CHI- Health St. Francis. Memorial Mass will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday at St. Leo's Catholic Church. Fr. Don Burhman will officiate. All Faiths Funeral Home is entrusted with arrangements.Janelle was born on October 3, 1924, in Wisner, Nebraska, daughter of Louis and Magdalane (Schirmer) Garrett.After graduating from Wisner High School in 1942, Janelle continued her education and attended Wayne State College. She found employment as a secretary for an alcohol plant in Omaha. While attending a dance to listen to her brother in the band, she met John "Jack" Shanahan. On April 24, 1948 they were married in San Francisco where they made their home until 1950. The couple moved to Grand Island where they settled and raised their three children, Bradley, Teresa and Lori. Janelle and Jack enjoyed dancing and would go most weekends to the Platt Duetsch to dance or play cards. Janelle took playing cards very seriously and only felt it was worth it when bets were made. She had a laugh that could be picked out of a crowd. Her generous heart and gentle spirit will be cherished by her family. She is survived by her children, Bradley Shanahan of Grand Island, Teresa (James) Brooks of Grand Island, and Lori (Russell) Koch of Seymore, MO; grandchildren, Jami, Jodi, Travis, Traci and Morgan; 15 great-grandchildren; along with numerous extended family and friends.Janelle was preceded in death by her husband, Jack; parents; brothers, Ronald Garrett and Vernon Garrett. Memorials are suggested to the family to be designated at a later date.
