Lawney L. Rathman, 90, of Grand Island passed away Thursday, May 24, 2018.
Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 5, at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home Chapel, with Pastor Darrell Holzinger officiating. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Monday at Livingston-Sondermann Funeral Home.
Lawney was born April 9, 1928, to Edward and Dora (Stoltenberg) Rathman at Cairo. He grew up on the family farm northeast of Cairo. He attended country school near Cairo and later Grand Island Senior High.
On Jan. 13, 1952, he was united in marriage to Sharleen McMullen in Grand Island at Trinity United Methodist Church. He entered the United States Army on April 1, 1952, serving in combat during the Korean War, and was honorably discharged on Jan. 12, 1954.
After he returned from the Army, the couple lived on a farm outside of Cairo for one year, and then moved to a farm south of Grand Island from 1954 to 1987. When they retired off the farm, they moved to Grand Island.
He loved farming, feeding cattle and spending time with his family. In 2014 he was awarded the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award, which honored families for 100 years of farm ownership. He was the great-grandson of the original settler, Claus Stoltenberg.
Survivors include his children, John (Dayna) Rathman of Bartlesville, Okla., Jim (Kathy) Rathman of Grand Island, Jennifer (Richard) Klanecky of Grand Island and Jeff Rathman of Shelby; grandchildren, Branden (Sarah) Stange, Sarah Rathman, Joshua Rathman, Colton Rathman, Dylan Rathman, Connor Rathman, Christopher Rathman, Audrie Rathman and Megan (Kyle) Kempf; great-grandchildren, Korbyn Stange, Maci Stange, Ryker Stange and Penelope Kempf; brother, Edward Jr. (Carole) Rathman; sister, Karen Hadenfeldt; and sisters-in-law, Phyllis Rathman and Rayleen McMullen.
He was preceded in death by his wife; parents; brother, Rodney Rathman; and sister, Joy Dibbern.
