Survivors of the immediate family include three sons and daughters-in-law, David and Lynda Kuhn of Hastings, Minn., James and Xochilh Kuhn of Belvidere, Ill., and Robert and Tracy Kuhn of Sterling, Ill.; a daughter, Deborah Kuhn of Norfolk; and in-laws, Don and Sue Dunning, Jerry and Barb Dunning, Tom and Diane Dunning, Mary Dunning and Patty Stein, all of Grand Island.
Additional survivors include grandchildren, Emily, Lydia, Jazmin, Kevin, Gabriela, Ashley, Amber, Tyler, Emerson and Leighton, and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon L. and Francis A. (Robb) Kuhn of Missouri Valley, Iowa; his devoted wife, Anna Marie (Dunning) Kuhn of Grand Island; two brothers, Carl Kuhn of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Donald Kuhn of Omaha; a sister, Mariea (Kuhn) Smithburg of Omaha; an infant grandson, Jacob; and a great-grandson, Ezra.
Having always been proactive in his health care, Max had elective cardiovascular surgery to extend and improve his quality of life. Having a strong will and drive, combined with exceptional surgical and ICU medical care, he recovered strong and was within days of discharge when he experienced an unexpected complication.
He was born in Missouri Valley, Iowa, on July 20, 1939, the third child of Vernon L. Kuhn and Francis A. Robb. Max was a 1957 graduate of Missouri Valley High School and attended Sioux Falls College in South Dakota, earning a bachelor's degree in science in 1962. He also was awarded the Wall Street Journal Student Achievement Award in business in 1962.
He married Anna Marie Dunning from Grand Island on Sept 27, 1966. Of this union, four children were raised. His retail management career had led them to Omaha, Colorado, Michigan, Illinois, and a final return to Nebraska. His career highlights include managing for Woolworth's, TG&Y in Charlotte, Mich., for 10 years, 20 years of managing Walmart stores located in Princeton, Ill., Davenport, Iowa, and Rock Falls, Ill., before retiring from the Norfolk store in 2004. He took great pride in meeting Sam Walton, founder of Walmart, having lunched with him on two occasions.
Max's most pleasurable times were spent with his family and being a great husband, father and provider. He was well-known as a highly organized and astute financial planner, always ensuring the family was raised in a nice home, ate well and was well cared for. He enjoyed evenings at home and attending country music concerts with his wife, Ann, working on cars with son, David, coaching and watching his son, James, in sports, hunting and fishing with his son, Robert, and countless years of being "everything" to his daughter, Deborah.

Max also took great pleasure in keeping up with his grandchildren's activities. He was fond of Emily and Lydia's accomplishments in 4-H and horse riding competitions, the academic pursuits of Jazmin and Gabriela, planting trees with Kevin, the orchestral and theatrical achievements of Ashley and Amber, and watching Tyler's passion for sports. And, at the age of 69, due to our mother's passing, he openly embraced the opportunity to raise infants Emerson and Leighton, a role that may have been his life's greatest pleasure.
He enjoyed being outdoors, gardening, hunting, fishing and tinkering about in the yard. Throughout his life he enjoyed long car rides in the country and long walks through the woods. He was known by work associates for being a kind and respectful manager who loved to interact with people and play Santa during numerous holiday parties. Max was a member of the Knights of Columbus.
Max always said he was fortunate to "have two great loves" in life. He is also survived by Ms. JoAnn Wohlers from Missouri Valley, Iowa, his first love from high school and in later years his loving companion. Driven by shared grief over lost spouses, they learned to experience the joys of life in a new form. She holds a special place in his life and was present with him until his passing. She grieves deeply with the family.
Max will forever be deeply respected by his family, friends and acquaintances for his kind words and gestures, expecting no reciprocation in return. His love, dedication and endless care provided to his wife during her times of illness, to include reading daily passages from the Bible until her passing, exemplified his high level of morality and love for his family. For this, his children will be eternally grateful.
Max, rest in peace with our Lord Jesus Christ.
Your loving family.
