Ruth M. Johnson, 95, of Grand Island went to her Heavenly home Friday, Aug. 11, 2017, at CHI-Health St. Francis.
Services will be 1 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Reverend Russell Anderson will officiate. Burial will be in the Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday at All Faiths Funeral Home.
Mrs. Johnson was born July 29, 1922, in Watseka, Ill., the daughter of Byron and Wilhelmina (Franzmann) McBroom. She grew up in Watseka and graduated from the Watseka Public Schools.
She was united in marriage to Richard L. Johnson on May 10, 1941, in Palmyra, Mo., after which the couple moved frequently while Mr. Johnson was employed with AT&T. They moved to Grand Island in 1950 where they remained. Mrs. Johnson was a homemaker and a mother. For 17 years she was the membership secretary at the Trinity United Methodist Church, retiring in 1980.
Her memberships included Trinity United Methodist Church, where she served on the Mission Team Board of United Methodist Women, and Church Circle, and she belonged to a Bible study group. She was past worthy matron of Andrew Chapter #41, past president of the Past Matron's Club, an officer in the Daughters of the Nile, past President of the Grand Island Shrine Auxiliary, and past Mother Advisor of Rainbow for Girls where she served on the Rainbow Board.
She was an associate member of the Telephone Pioneers, a member of the Stuhr Museum where she volunteered, a volunteer with Lifeline and St. Francis Hospital - having received Lifeline Volunteer of the year in 1994 - and a past president of the Clover Leaf Extension Club. She also helped in Girl Scouts for seven years and for two years served as an assistant leader.
She also mentored kindergarten and first grade for Howard Elementary, volunteered at Lakeview Nursing Center and the Salvation Army. Ruth was selected as an Extraordinary Person by the Grand Island Independent.
Survivors include her daughters, Susan Pezoldt and Sharon (Ronald) Johnson, both of Lincoln; grandchildren, Michelle, Melissa, Brian and Scott; and great-grandchildren, Morgan, Courtney, Austyn, Carter, Charla and Grayson.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1988; brother, Kenneth McBroom; and special friend, Carl McCullough.
